Dear Savita,

You didn’t know me. I never knew you. We lived in different worlds.

I can’t claim that we have any connection, even now.

All I can say is that I’m sorry.

I know you’ll never read this; you can’t. But I’m telling you that I’m sorry anyways. I’m sorry that you had to go through what you went through. I’m sorry on behalf of my fellow homo sapiens. I’m sorry that some of us are so cruel… so disgusting… that we would do this to you, all in the name of fucking religion.

I wish I knew what else to say.

I wish I knew what I could do to honor your memory. I can’t protest in Ireland. I can’t even protest at the Irish embassy in the US, because I live in Florida, which is not very near Washington, DC at all.

I am pro-choice, and I will always be. I will continue to support Planned Parenthood, safe-sex education, and good science for as long as I live. What happened to you was avoidable. But you knew that.

I’m so, so sorry, Savita. I really am. It should never have happened. You should never have gone through it. It isn’t fair. It isn’t right. It isn’t human.

I never knew you, but I will miss you.

Every time you walk into your church and sit in those pews and put money in those baskets, this is what you support.

OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES! STOP EXCUSING A BASTION OF WORLD EVIL! THIS IS WHAT THE FUCKING CATHOLIC CHURCH DOES! THIS IS WHAT A SO-CALLED “PRO-LIFE” POSITION LEADS TO!

Your church needs to go. It has held too much fucking sway and too much fucking power. It’s time to boot the church out of the entire fucking world. It’s time to tell the Pope to take his infallibility and fucking shove it where the sun don’t shine.

Stop calling yourselves “Pro-Life”. You’re not. You never have been and you never will be. You are anti-choice. You are misogynistic. You are pathetic and full of shit.

ETA: Maybe I’ll change that in a few days when I’m no longer as angry as I am right now. But even then, you don’t get to separate Catholicism from this tragedy. Savita was denied the abortion that would have saved her fucking life on the grounds that Ireland “is a Catholic country”. That is what the doctors told her.

“This is a Catholic country.”

So deny the connection all you want.
