So yes, I think an official commercial would be incredible.
However, the commercial needs to serve a very specific purpose.
It should not be about proselytizing atheism or otherwise trying to get theists to become atheists. That, obviously, is a huge mistake. It also should not attack religion in any way, shape, or form.
The target audience for this commercial should be closeted atheists. Atheists who, for whatever reason, are afraid to admit that they’re atheists publically. Atheists, who sign up for atheist websites online, but do so anonymously, and do everything in their power to keep their identity from becoming known.
Most of all, it should target atheists who really think they are alone.
And this is how I think this commercial should work:
Start off with either ominous or sad music. Show silhouetted people, adults and children, questioning god and religion in their heads. The background should be dark, dreary, and bleak. It should build to a point when we hear, above the din, “THERE IS NO GOD!”
Immediately switch to more positive, happy music, and a bright, happy background, and then a parade of celebrities and famous people, each one saying:
“Hi. I’m __________, and I’m an atheist.”
Then, bring in someone famous for their atheism (like Richard Dawkins or Bill Maher or Julia Sweeney or such) to give a very SHORT monologue on how atheists are out there, that we are not alone, and that there are ways to reach out. You don’t need to be afraid because you’re questioning; because you have doubts.
However the monologue is written, the commercial should end with an aerial shot of every famous person featured in the commercial, along with [presenter], and all of them saying “and we’re atheists!” The last screen seen would show the logos for all the organizations that sponsored the commercial.
Celebrities I can think of off the top of my head include Olivia Wilde, Kiera Knightley, Daniel Radcliffe, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Woody Allen, Kevin Bacon, Derren Brown, James Cameron, Joss Whedon, Stephen Fry, Matt Smith (current Doctor Who), Sir Ian Murray McKellen, Jodie Foster, Lewis Black, Seth Green, Billy Joel (if he still is), Seth MacFarlane, Dame Helen Mirren, Julia Phillips, the Mythbusters (I know Adam, Jamie, and Kari are atheists; I could be wrong, but I thought Tory and Grant were atheists, as well) , Bill Gates, Penn & Teller… in fact, there’s a whole list here you can pull from. I’d ask that, if anyone actually does agree to put this commercial together, they attempt to balance out the men and women as much as possible….
Now the question is… who do I send this idea to, exactly?
