I don’t really deserve to ask for help… and, as noted in the title, it’s not for anything bad. It’s actually for something really, really good!
I was selected to get a grant to go to Women in Secularism 2!
Yay!!!!!!!!
And I really want to go. Like… badly. Partly because it’ll be the first real atheist conference I’ve ever been to, and partly because I’ll get to meet many cool people, and partly because I really want to meet more atheists, and partly because of others things, and partly because of those things, and, and…
Well, you get the idea.
Problem is, this grant can’t actually get me to the conference, or get me a place to stay. It just gets me in to the conference.
So what I need is money, for a round-trip plane ticket and a hotel.
The hotel where the conference is taking place has rooms starting at $149 a night. This probably doesn’t include taxes and shit like that.
The cheapest flight I could find is Spirit Airlines, at about $115 for a round-trip ticket.
And I’d still need a way to get from the airport to the hotel.
I thought about possibly driving up, but I’m not sure if my car, a used 2002 Honda Civic, would make it. And even if it would, I’d need to figure in gas, and food/coffee during the drive, since I’ll be making a go of it in one day.
So, I’d like to ask for donations, except for one problem: I can’t use PayPal. So unless there’s another something out there that people can use to send me money that isn’t PayPal, that wouldn’t work. I do have an account with Chase…
So…
Erm…
What do y’all think? Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?
Please?

Yay Nate! I’ll see you there. đŸ™‚ FYI – transportation in town should be cheap because the hotel’s right off the Metro. So no need to rent a car or anything crazy like that. The event’s page on the CFI website has people looking for hotel roommates to reduce costs (http://www.centerforinquiry.net/forums/viewthread/14334/) if that helps!
I’m not sure where you got your grant, but Secular Woman is offering travel grants. You do have to be a member, but to become one is not out of range ($10-$20 a year). If you don’t get the grant, you can at least know that your membership is for a good organization!
SurlyAmy is who gave me the grant.
I actually got a last-minute temp job that’s paying me $240. That will cover the flight (roundtrip) quite nicely. Now I just need room, transportation to the hotel, and spending money. I’ll be posting an update either tonight or tomorrow.
One of these Paypal alternatives might work for you: Amazon Payments, BlueSnap, BMT Micro, Dwolla, Skrill, or WePay.
